UN Security Council Faces Sharp Divisions Amid Middle East Crisis:

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened an emergency session on Saturday following the United States’ airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities—actions that have triggered global outrage, sharpened geopolitical divisions, and raised fears of a broader conflict.

Key Developments:

  • Russia, China, and Pakistan circulated a draft resolution calling for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” in the region. While the draft refrains from explicitly naming the US or Israel, it condemns the attacks on Iranian nuclear infrastructure.
  • The resolution’s fate appears sealed even before a vote is scheduled, as any one of the five permanent UNSC members—particularly the United States, which is unlikely to censure itself—holds veto power.
  • UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a stern warning, calling the current moment a “perilous turn” in a region already grappling with instability.

“We now risk descending into a rathole of retaliation after retaliation,” Guterres told the Council. “We must act – immediately and decisively – to halt the fighting and return to serious, sustained negotiations on the Iran nuclear programme.”

US and Israel Defend Strikes, Reject Condemnation:

Acting US Ambassador Dorothy Shea defended the airstrikes, stating that the mission aimed to “dismantle Iran’s enrichment capacity” and protect US citizens and allies in the region.

“The time finally came for the United States, in defence of its ally and our own interests, to act decisively,” Shea said. “Any Iranian attack, direct or indirect, against Americans or American bases will be met with devastating retaliation.”

Israel’s UN envoy, Danny Danon, echoed similar sentiments, calling the operation a step towards global safety. He refused to support regime change in Iran but emphasized that “such decisions belong to the Iranian people.”

Iran Blames US for Destroying Diplomacy:

Iran’s Ambassador Ali Bahreini strongly denounced the strikes, stating that the aggression was not unprovoked but rather the result of “politically motivated actions” by Washington and its European partners.

He accused the US of “destroying diplomacy” and warned that Iran’s military would determine the “timing, nature and scale” of its response to the attacks.

A Tipping Point in Global Diplomacy:

This latest UNSC session underscored how deeply polarized the international community remains on the Iran issue. With no consensus in sight and vetoes likely, diplomatic deadlock persists as military tensions escalate.

As Iran vows retaliation and the US and Israel stand firm, the world watches closely. The UNSC’s inability to forge a unified response further deepens the uncertainty over what comes next in an already volatile Middle East.
